Myanmar seems to be in another planet although it is situated next to Thailand, is a very popular tourist destination in Southeast Asia. From the mid sixties, Myanmar had closed its door to outsiders for about three decades and started practising market-oriented economy just over one decade ago. Since then centrally controlled or state-owned tourism industry gave way to private sector and private tour operators who are striving to promote Myanmar to be the latest destination for culture tours within the Southeast Asia Region. After that Myanmar has been attractive to culture tourists because of its rich cultural resources and heritage. What Myanmar can offer to culture tourists include its ancient capitals, religious edifices, unique handicrafts and different lifestyles. Over and above this, Myanmar has a lot of potentials for eco-tourism, ethnic/ indigenous tourism, and agro/rural tourism. Due to the expansion of tourism development in Myanmar, more and more communities whether voluntarily or nonvoluntarily have been and will be involved in tourism. Tourism is to some extent, affecting the lives of rural people in Myanmar. Myanmar is not only rich in culture but in its variety of people. The ethnic groups of Myanmar are descendants of three main branches: The Mon-Khmer, the Tibeto-Burman, and the Thai-Chinese. Myanmar is blessed with natural scenic beauty making for landscapes that are incredibly picturesque such as majestic snow-capped mountains in the north, beautiful waterfalls and lakes, unspoilt beaches and natural forests.
